Mate desktop even with all its improvements over Gnome 2 still uses the defective screensaver settings without option to actually change the settings for installable screensavers (xscreensavers). This guide will allow you to replace it with the while not as graphically modern more usable xscreensaver.

Note: This was adapted from the original article "Replace gnome-screensaver with xscreensaver on Debian 5.0"

  1. su
  2. apt remove mate-screensaver
  3. apt install xscreensaver xscreensaver-data-extra xscreensaver-gl-extra xscreensaver-screensaver=*
  4. Screensavers should be now using xscreensaver
